Heavy menstrual bleeding, known medically as menorrhagia, affects 1 in 5 women physically and mentally. It can affect your mood, energy, work, social life and your general well-being. Approximately one half of all cases of heavy menstrual bleeding have no obvious cause. In other cases, the possibility of uterine abnormalities or hormonal imbalances may exist. Other physical problems may also cause menorrhagia and might include uterine fibroids or polyps, infection, cancer, or a bleeding disorder. Source: Thermablate Patient Information.

Mirena
An IUS is a small, T-shaped contraceptive device that fits inside the womb (uterus) and releases the female hormone progestogen into the body. The IUS that is available in Ireland is called Mirena and works for up to five years after being fitted. Mirena is useful for reducing menstrual blood flow so it can be used if you suffer heavy menstrual bleeding. Source HSE
Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the womb. It’s the most effective way of preventing fibroids coming back. A hysterectomy may be recommended if you have large fibroids or severe bleeding and do not wish to have any more children. Source: NHS.
