HPV and Stress

Stress is our body’s normal reaction to the pressures life throws our way. We all know that stress can be detrimental to our health and this includes the persistent recurrence of HPV infection. Scientific studies show that stress negatively impacts our immune system and a healthy immune system is our body’s first line of defence against HPV. The majority of HPV infections will clear up within 18 months.

Here are some tips to reduce your stress levels:

  • Maintain an active lifestyle: exercise will help to rid your body of the excess stress hormones and helps to clear your mind leaving you much calmer.
  • Be social: connect with friends and family, sharing your problems with others can make you feel less alone.
  • Breathe: deep breathing can relax your body and will help focus your mind on the positive.
  • Try to avoid alcohol and caffeine: these are stimulants that can exacerbate stress levels and are best not relied upon as a coping mechanism.
  • Be mindful of your thoughts: your outlook influences your mindset. Try your best to remain in a positive frame of mind.
  • Set realistic goals: be kinder to yourself by setting attainable goals. Being over-stressed about something can make it more difficult to keep things in perspective.

A healthy immune system is more likely to clear a HPV infection within 18 months.
